IMPORTANT: All EMS providers, administrators and medical directors are encouraged to read the following information in its entirety.

In November of 2002, Dr. Ken Palys, medical director for the BREMS region, assemble a group of EMS providers from across the region to revise the Standard Operating Patient Care Protocols. Committee members included Co-Chairs Sam Bryant and Jason Campbell, Heather Childress, DeeDee Soyars, Billy Clark, Janet Blankenship, and Roger Irvin. In March of 2003, the committee presented a draft version to the BREMS Board of Directors and to each medical director in the region. After numerous revisions and reviews, Dr. Palys has approved the final version.

A printed copy of the protocols are being produced for each EMS agency in the BREMS region. Each agency will also receive a CD-ROM with the protocols on it and the protocols will be published on the BREMS website. Finally, it is hopeful that each EMS provider will receive a pocket-sized copy of the protocols in the near future.

In order for EMS providers to operate under the new guidelines, each EMS provider will be required to attend a series of rollout training sessions. It is the intent to have the new protocols implemented by October 15th. While this will require a lot of hard work on behalf of everyone in the region, it will culminate in the progression of the BREMS region to a higher level of patient care. If an EMS provider does not complete the required training by October 15th then he/she will continue to operate under the current protocols until such time that they have completed the modules for particular skills.

For questions regarding the implementation of the protocols, contact Jason Campbell at (434) 942-6095 or e-mail jcampbell911@adelphia.net
